How to Install a Home EV Charger in Indonesia

Charging at home is the cheapest and most practical way to charge an electric car day to day: plug in when you arrive, full when you wake up. But before you can charge overnight in Indonesia, there are a few things to set up, namely choosing a wallbox (a home charging unit), making sure your PLN electrical supply is adequate, and upgrading the supply if needed. This guide covers the install side, not the per-charge cost: what you need, how much power is ideal, the install cost range, the PLN promo currently running, and how to register through the PLN Mobile app. Every cost figure here is sourced and given as a range because it depends on your home, the brand of equipment, and PLN policy. To compare the cost of charging at home with a public station, see the cost guide at /id/guide/biaya-cas-rumah-vs-spklu. For the cost formula itself, see /id/guide/cara-menghitung-biaya-cas-mobil-listrik.

What you need to charge at home

To charge an electric car at home there are two basic options: a regular socket or a dedicated wallbox. A regular socket is only around 2.2 kW, so charging is very slow and can take many hours for a large charge, and it risks overheating on wiring that was not designed for a long sustained load. That is why, for everyday use, installing a dedicated AC wallbox is far more ideal. A home wallbox is usually rated at around 7 kW (single phase), which is much faster and safer for routine charging.

Choosing a wallbox involves a few considerations: power (usually 7 kW at home), features (some are simple, some are smart with an app and scheduling), and compatibility with your car's connector. Just as important, your home electrical supply must be adequate to support that wallbox while still leaving room for other appliances. The next section covers how much PLN power is realistic for a 7 kW wallbox, and whether you need to upgrade your supply.

How much PLN power you need, and upgrading it

For an AC wallbox of around 7 kW at home, the realistic PLN supply is around 7,700 VA (single phase), so the wallbox can run at full power while leaving capacity for other household appliances (source: maskoelectrical.com, electgo.id, and suara.com, 21 February 2026, as of 2026). Many homes are still on 2,200 VA or 5,500 VA, so they need a power upgrade (tambah daya) before installing a wallbox. This figure should be checked per home, because each home's electricity use is different.

A power upgrade is done through PLN. You request the upgrade, PLN adjusts your home's limiter and connected-power tariff, then the wallbox installation can proceed. It is important to note that upgrading raises your connected power, so some monthly charges can change; consider your home's total needs, not just the wallbox. If you are unsure about the right power, consult PLN and a certified installation technician before installing.

Install cost: charger, connection, and the PLN HCS promo

The install cost has several parts, and all of them are best understood as ranges, not fixed numbers. First, the wallbox unit itself: it ranges from around Rp 5 million to Rp 10 million or more, depending on the brand, power, and smart features (source: maskoelectrical.com, montiro.id, otospector.co.id, as of 2026). Second, the PLN connection or power-upgrade fee if your home power is not yet sufficient. Third, the installation labour by a certified technician.

PLN runs a Home Charging Services 2.0 promo that gives a 50% discount on the connection fee (new installation or power upgrade) for electric-car owners. This promo runs from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, so it is time-limited (source: web.pln.co.id press release, gridoto.com, infobanknews.com, as of 2026). As a sourced example, a new connection upgrade to 7,700 VA of around Rp 7.46 million can become around Rp 3.73 million after the discount, and 13,200 VA of around Rp 12.79 million can become around Rp 6.40 million (source: maskoelectrical.com, otomotif.kompas.com, 12 February 2026). These figures depend on the promo, your home's condition, and PLN policy; check the latest in PLN Mobile.

Some providers also offer a complete turnkey package through Home Charging Services that bundles the charger unit, installation, the certificate of operational fitness (SLO), and VAT into one price. A premium package like this ranges from around Rp 15.8 million to Rp 21.1 million depending on the brand, based on packages shown at the IIMS 2026 event (source: otomotif.kompas.com, 12 February 2026, as of 2026). This is the upper turnkey tier; many people install for less by buying a wallbox and arranging the installation themselves. Because promos and prices can change, treat all of these figures as dated ranges and check PLN Mobile and official providers before deciding. The PLN connection promo runs until 30 June 2026.

How to register through PLN Mobile and the 30% off-peak discount

Home charging registration is done through the PLN Mobile app. In general the steps are: download and open PLN Mobile, sign in with your customer account, then choose the relevant service, whether a new installation, a power upgrade, or the Home Charging Services option (source: web.pln.co.id, kapanlagi.com, as of 2026). From there you can submit a request and follow the process. Because the app layout and menu names can change, follow the latest in-app guidance or contact PLN customer service.

Beyond the install cost, there is one operational incentive relevant to home-charging users: PLN gives a 30% discount for charging at night, namely 22:00 to 05:00 (source: web.pln.co.id, bydindonesia.co.id, as of 2026). This discount fits the overnight charging pattern and can lower your daily electricity cost. Like the connection promo, this off-peak discount window runs until 30 June 2026, so it is time-limited and is best re-checked in PLN Mobile.
